The Epson sx415 provides   impressive   photo quality. Colours were bright & vivid, skin tones were accurate and smooth with very little bleeding. Photo printing is quite slow, but I would preferably wait for a great photo then have a poor one instantly!

On  normal print mode text was dark and easy to read, close scrutiny would reveal a few imperfections but I am being finicky especially at the price these printers are  going  for now. Its not the fastest machine  in the shops  by any means and some HP’s and Canon’s are quicker. Draft mode is lightening quick, but tripe. Documents with graphs and illustrations were vivid and accurate, very pleasing on the eye.

The 1,200×2,400dpi scanner is very good and produced quality scans on both documents and photographs with excellent fine detail on our scanned photos.

Photo printing and scan quality are both very good makes the sx415 excellent value for money, considering you can pick one up for under £65 if you shop around .

So don’t plump for a cheapo Lexmark , spend a little more and  grab  yourself a nice little Epson multifunction machine.

The camera works best with best lighting conditions, that means plenty of clear daylight. The flash can be used indoors and works well enough, however there are no sensors to tell the camera how much flash is needed. Therefore when taking pictures close up there is a tendency to washout or over expose the photo. The megapixel count on the Kiddiezoom is pitifully low at 2.0mp  so blowing a picture up to A4 is not a reality. Best to keep them small and display them on a computer screen, your child will be  well satisfied with the results even if you find some of the snaps a little fuzzy. Children’s digital cameras are never going to set the world on fire with crisp clear photographs but they more than serve the purpose of getting your children to understand something about picture taking and that can only be a good thing.

The pictures were taken both indoors and in a glass consevatory, the weather was lousy that day, light was just about okay and one or two shots were taken with flash. Our grand kids love this camera and it goes everywhere with them, despite its shortcomings, this is a camera aimed only at the under fives and in that respect it does a really good job. For children who are more advanced consider buying a point and adult camera.

We like to believe that all of us are an artsy family group, and like photography very much. Our three grandchildren, ranging from two to five, have had a few of those low-cost childrens digital cameras, every one of which they have destroyed. Battery life was a bit heavy too but at least the Kiddiezoom has an auto switch off which means the camera cannot be left live when not in use. As digital kids cameras go we think that this one is worth taking a punt at.
